My neurologist prescribed it. I was at Queen's Hospital in Honolulu so you probably won't end up there. I'd been suffering from what I was sure was food poisoning. After a few days I was so sick, my husband called an ambulance. When I was admitted to the hospital they discovered I was under the care of a neuro who is on staff and they called him in. His immediate diagnosis was inflammatory colitis. He said I was having an MS flare. He started me on a very high dosage of solmedrol, in spite of my protests. I was still sure I had food poisoning, and I knew the solumedrol would weaken my immune system. That was the last thing I needed. My condition continued to decline, so after 5 days on solumedrol the doctored another 5 days of it. By then I'd lost 30 pounds and I was pretty sure I was near death. I told everyone who walked into my hospital room - doctors, nurses, janitors, even the chaplain - that I was sure I had food poisoning and I wanted to stop the solumedrol and be treated with an antibiotic. FINALLY after 21 days in the hospital, a young ward doctor came in and he actually listened to me. The discovered I had e coli and salmonella and a raging bladder and kidney infection. He defied my neuro's orders and prescribed an antibiotic. Withing 12 hours I started to come back to life and I was released from the hospital the next day.

Wow. Thank God for that young doctor who listened.

I have had two rounds of 3days each over the last three months. first for optic neuritis and seconds for walking issues and exhaustion. Has side effects definitely, but it was worth dealing with inability to sleep, nausea, and the emotional roller coaster for a week was better than the pain and almost blindness in one eye getting better quickly.

I've had the iv of that twice (each one 3 days each) and I didn't notice a huge difference in my symptoms going away. It also had the opposite reaction that most people seem to have...I fell asleep and wasn't hungry..while I hear a lot of people get very hungry and are wide awake..good luck!
