I'm at the point where I feel the need to use hand controls while driving rather than relying on my right leg and foot. I drive a Ford Fusion that is in great shape and is very low mileage. I'm wondering if I should modify my current vehicle or trade it in for a van that could accommodate the potential need for a power wheelchair. Thoughts?
I would wait on the van until I absolutely needed it - they are gas hogs and why wear it out when you can still drive the Ford Fusion? Just my opinion
@A MyMSTeam Member, thanks for the suggestion. It's actually my left leg and foot that are completely worthless. The right side still works, but has gotten weaker and slower, and I'm trying to prepare ahead of time. That's why I'm trying to decide between modifying the car or going right to a van that could accommodate a power chair scenario. I don't need it yet.....but you never know. I don't drive all that much anymore, but I don't want to lose that independence.
did you try the portable hand controls?
Get a left foot accelerator installed in your car. My right leg doesn't work anymore and I drive with my left foot. The left foot accelerator easily is removed so anybody can drive it. I live in NY and I also needed to get approved by my county but I know rules definitely vary by state. Good luck!
I would talk to your doctor first then talk to a dealer.
