I am incontinent and use Depends. This causes issues such as chaffing and rashes. I was wondering what the up and down side of catheters are. All I have ever heard is how they can cause UTI's and to avoid them.
I straight cath'd for many years and didn't have any problems. Your bathroom routine would be the same when you needed to go you use a catheter which empties your entire bladder. It makes a difference when you can empty that way there is no urine sitting in your bladder to cause infections. That is not saying you would never get one but they are more rare. I could wear regular underwear - always had a catheter in my purse. If I was going someplace I had never been, I may wear a pad just in case. There are also medications out there that can help.
I have to use a catheter, and I hate it, but it's better than the other option of going all over yourself. Really hurts your love life to.
I self cath 2-3 times daily and take Mybetriq. I can wear normal underwear again. Makes me feel somewhat like my old self again. 😊
