Hello. So sometimes I experience urine retention that lasts a few days. I'm retaining right now and its so annoying. I have been looking into self-catheterization. Im a guy, so can anyone tell me how is that process? And if it's a good choice? Does it hurt? Do they teach you how to do it yourself? Also, does anybody know other "tricks" to urinate better?
I'm a girl. But I would strongly advise you to. Urine retention can cause kidney damage. The nurses at my clinic were extremely helpful teaching me how to cath. It is not painful for me. Don't know about guys. I also take medication for urgency and frequency.
Not a guy but as a RN I can tell you cathing is much easier as a guy - only 1 "hole" and you can see what you are doing! LOL! It is uncomfortable at first, male or female, because that should only be a one way street, but you get used to it. You will be so much more comfortable physically by getting all the urine out at one time and actually being empty! In my case, I would pee upstairs and because of retention, by the time I got downstairs I would have to pee again. I also get Botox due to frequency and urgency. It's nice to be able to sleep through the night and not have to pee, and be able to go somewhere and not worry if there's a bathroom in close proximity (or not go somewhere because you know there won't be an easy bathroom). And yes, they teach you. I use speedi-caths which are small, pre-lubricated catheters that fit in your pocket. Easy peasy! Hope this helps a bit!
Pure cranberry juice and drinking lots of water
I tried a few years ago and had a hard time. I think because I have decreased sensation in my fingers and I was all stresssd out about it. Female and have not done it in a two years. Was having retention of 180 and other urologist just said don't worry about it. Had retention and frequency. I know if I take baclofen or flexeral it causes retention for me. No easy answer.
I am female and have been self cathing for about
Fifteen years it helps a lot. I know it is different for males but I can only speak for myself it really helps.
Good luck
