I have PPMS and recently also had breast cancer. With both illnesses I've been surrounded by messages that I should 'fight' or 'battle' the illness. I've been told this both by the media, social media and in person by well meaning and concerned friends and family. I've also been told to embrace and own the term MS Warrior. Am I alone in having this war based terminology? I feel like it somehow gives power to the illness and also implies that you 'should' be able to win the battle and conquer the… read more
I don't like the words MS Warrior. Yes we are brave in fighting this disease but we also have to accept it isn't going to go away but live our lives differently with lots of planning. Acceptance and Mindfulness has helped me but I do have a full life ! Sorry to hear you had breast cancer too. Your words mean such a lot to me and I agree that sometimes cancer patients just can't overcome their illness just because they didn't "fight hard enough" is ridiculous!
Positivity is the key but we are allowed a cry day too!
I had counselling which was life changing for me. It helped me realise that dispite my body changing ( I used to be very physically fit, wore high heels 👠hahaha) it's still me inside my body.
I think you have a great attitude, not a "warrior " but a strong kind person 😊 X
Part of the "battle " is knowing the name of the enemy. MS is the enemy. Being a warrior implies not allowing it to rule your life. There is nothing wrong with acceptance of MS. I accept daily and modify as I need to, how I'm being affected. I'm taking medicine as prescribed and exercise etc as needed to live better with what I have. I'm proud to be a warrior and if I go down..there will be warriors after me fighting the same enemy and someday...the warriors will Win!! I believe the same with cancer. The warrriors before, that have fought and did not survive, will be lifted up by the ones in the future who have. I guess I have a romantic way of seeing things...?
I think it's just I don't see MS as something separate from me to be fought. It's just something I have and will live with positively and as well as I can. It's part of me and I don't want to battle myself but to accept who I am and live as well and as happily as I can.
Good question I've also been through both ,and all I can say is I find certain famous you can do it or your a warrior at times unnerving ,even more so save the tatas, which is annoying as anyone who's had their breast carved on makes me cringe ,I'm not upset with my life and try to find balance even a boring life is good as I realize it's short and we go on no matter what ,so smell the flowers ,eat the cake and be happy ,even when I get into bed ,your still here!💓
I understand that absolutely. I don't consider that I battle myself at all and completely see where you are coming from. I am a lover and not a hater. I bring peace and not fight. You have great views! I will be proactive all that I can to overcome obstacles and I'm not afraid to do it with absolute love. Hang in there sister!
