What are the meetings like? The only thing that comes to mind is what you see on TV for AA meetings, where person stands up, introducing themselves.........Being brand new to where I live as well as MS, I was thinking attending the monthly meeting might be beneficial.

I don't go to a local MS support group and I don't think one is in town. I've found this site to be very helpful and comforting. I would think that a support group would be perfect for you since you are new to where you live. It will give you an opportunity to meet others and an extra opportunity to meet others with ms, which could be helpful.

These meetings can turn into a little bit of complaining, so if you call one ahead of time just ask what kind of group they are. You'll be able to gauge how the group is by their tone. Don't be afraid to ask questions. These group are supposed to support you so if you aren't feeling it just move on to the next.

You'll quickly learn how people handle MS differently so it can be quite an eye opener. Online you can quickly read comments and keep scrolling, but in person it's much different. I found that I was in some good company. A few downers here and there, but MS is tough and we all have bad days. so just be there to offer support to your fellow warriors!

When I lived in Idaho I used to go all the time because we had a lot of fun and learned a lot but since I moved to Illinois I only went to 1 and stopped going because it was nothing like the meetings I was used to. I guess it's what you make of it and I really didn't give the meetings in Illinois much of a chance.

If you are newly diagnosed, then I would recommend that you find a support group for newly diagnosed, or mildly affected. The last thing you should see is someone who is very badly affected.

Lol. No you dont stand up and introduce yourself. You sit. Ha ha
Im in one that meets once a month on Saturdays. Its kinda disorganized..but I like the people. Theres another one in a different city on Friday nights. I have yet to go, but there always seems to be a definite topic at this one. The one I go to now is just fly by night. However, most members are veteran MS survivors. They kinda help the more emotional newbies, like me embrace changes😋 But we discuss whats new in the last month, etc. We need a timer though. Lots of interruptions and long talkers. Steals too much time!
