@A MyMSTeam Member you have already made one of the toughest decisions so give yourself a pat on the back! Before I try to explain the process further be sure you're really ready to go down this path. Do you want disability or just need some help from your employer. It sounds easy but it wasn't for me. Just say to your doctor you are wondering about applying for disability. You might want to get an appointment sooner than later. That will start the conversation and you might think of more questions then but definitely ask which disability lawyer they recommend. It's good to know you won't pay the attorney one dollar from your bank account. They are paid from your first SSA draw. Your doctor should start to fill out some disability forms that you can obtain from the HR department at work. It's better to tell more people that are required to keep your discussions private. When you do talk to your HR department ask if they have any disability insurance programs. Hey, it's worth a shot. They may talk to about FMLA programs. They may not know the ins and outs of every program but they are a good place to start. I think I had a good attorney who made me see other doctors to further support my application. YOU DON'T NEED AN ATTORNEY TO GET DISABILITY APPROVED but it sure helped me. The whole SSA disability process took me 6 months but you may initially be rejected by SSA. Don't let this discourage you. Getting disability can and will be accomplished!

Thank you Karen! Were you employed when you applied? I have long term disability insurance with my employer as well, did they do the filing for you?

I went thru this in 2016. It was reluctant, was admitting I wasnt OK, but it was a relief to me, its a process. My disability insurance used a company called Allsup. I didnt have to us an attorney. I dont know about their fees since my employers disability insurance used them, but they made it very no-hassle. Best of luck to you!
