Can We Donate Blood With Having MS?

A MyMSTeam Member asked a question 💭
Milwaukee, WI

No idea why it would really matter but just curious if blood centers will take the blood from someone with MS. I used to donate but haven't since I've been diagnosed. Embarrassed to be turned away.

I actually called our Regional Medic Blood Donation Center in Knoxville, TN to check if I was able to continue as a regular Blood and Platelets donor, including my registration as a Bone Marrow Donor. They stated that anyone with an Auto Immune disorder such as Mutiple Sclerosis were EXCLUDED from ANY FORM of Donation of Body Fluids, Parts ie donor registry upon death, Living Kidney Donor, Blood and all components. As I'd donated since the age of 18, I was devastated that this area of my life was also 'shut down' due to this stupid disease!😡🤬🥺

In the past, people with MS couldn't donate at American Red Cross blood drives or banks. ... People with the disease have been able to give blood in the U.S since 2007. If you're healthy, on treatment, and your MS is under control, you should be able to donate at the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross allows you to donate blood or blood plasma if you have MS. I also donate plasma at BioLife without a problem.

I have always wondered the same thing. Also about bone marrow donation. I never get a straight answer

I have had MS since 1968. I have always donated blood. At least that was the case when I was younger. They never turned me down for donating. I really don't think MS can be transmitted. It is a disease in our genes and not contagious.
