Do anyone feel hopeless at times. I've been really struggling this week. What do you do to get through the tough times?
Can I be honest ? I have found that when I ma moping, it is therapeutic to me to read others stories.. I find that my situation could be worse and I am an empath, so I feel their pain(s) literally.. Then, I find myself feeling better because I am not in the worst condition I can be (or so I tell myself) and it builds my endorphins up and gives me a lil pep.. Just me being honest..
I could ramble on for pages on the subject tbh, been on a psychological ride that money couldn't buy.
Without knowing anything about your circumstances and prognosis it's hard to assess your situation and how true the word "hopeless" is in it.
Feeling hopeless is either based on reality (as in you have a terminal condition and are about to die), or perception (as in your brain telling you things will never get better, whether that's health/wealth/relationships/employment or anything else)
In the health sense, and living with MS, there is a sense of hopelessness that comes and goes in intensity depending on how good or bad you feel on any day. It's about managing those feelings, they're never going to go away completely and I accept that now (as much as I can)
The longer you live with it, the more you encounter good and bad days and realize that time doesn't stand still and your psychology also goes up and down as each day or week passes.
I reached the bottom of the well 6 years ago, knowing how bad things CAN get and how much your brain can lie to you if left to do so, has given me a far greater sense of perspective of how true "hopeless" is in my own situation.
I reflected on things 3 or 4 years ago and realized how much strength from inside me it took to just survive that period of time. It's almost set me free/born again stuff, finding the fighter within me again.
I ended up stopping the anti depressants that had been my life for over 25 years and whilst I'm not saying I'm the life and soul of a party, I don't have the catastrophic thinking and am more in control of my thoughts and feelings now.
In a strange way, everything that happened to me (which is in my story if anyone can be bothered reading) has been a blessing for my mental state...........LONG AFTER the event it must be said.
If things are really dark in your world the best thing you can do is what I call go into survival mode, nothing matters but today and making it to the end of today, whatever you've got to do, but do try and eat and drink.
Psychology is half the battle in dealing with MS, feeling motivated to push yourself helps far more than giving in to it and fading away, that's my particular ongoing battle because I'm just naturally lazy and hate all forms of exercise !
The shorter answer to your question is your psychology is something only YOU can work on, you can see all the counselors you like but until you realize it's only YOU that can take control of your thoughts then in my experience you'll just go round in circles .
In the same way that working out to achieve a better physique can only be done by YOU, a physical trainer can help, but can't DO the graft for you, same story with mental trainers (counselors)
Best of luck to you and sorry this did end up a ramble !
Hi Tarra. Depression can rear it’s head from time to time with MS. Meditation can help and it helps to look at all the good in your life and put your best foot forward even if just figuratively.
I try to stay positive and focus on what I can do and realize my situation could be so much worse.
Depression is very common in MS and there are physiological reasons so medication can help ( I found a combination of Lyrica and low dose Cymbalta made such a difference to my pain I felt much better). I still have times I feel very down but these episodes are short lived (ie a day) so I accept my feelings are valid and focus on what I enjoy (reading, listening to a favourite podcast etc)
