Has Anyone Tried An Ankle Foot Brace For Foot Drop?
I’ve had MS since 1995 and can't seem to get left foot back with simple exercises this time. The AFO is highly recommended by my PT and Neurologist. I’m afraid my pining/burning foot won’t tolerate it
I have an AFO for my left ankle (also foot drop) the straps go across the ankle and the calf. I think its very helpful when the ankle doen’t want to cooperate. I highly recomend! PS you will appriciate high socks with the AFO Good luck!
how high is it? i wear them on both legs but NOT ankle. it is higher but very effective? velcro wrap fasteners above the ankle and just below the knee. very steadying feeling
I just came across your question - didn't join up till this year. Yes, I have worn AFOs and the old fashion lower leg brace. Most often on my right leg only but the last time I needed to wear them I had to have them on both lower legs. The ones I used slipped inside the shoe but I had to buy shoes 2 sizes larger in order to fit them inside the shoe (I wore sneakers). I have been fortunate because my doctor ordered PT to do along with wearing the brace(s) and I was blessed because I only had to wear them for a short period of time. I no longer am able to walk and use a power w/c to get around but I think I would probably have to be in them permanently by now if I could walk as my foot drip has worsened.
Yes I do. It wraps around my ankle and goes up to mid calf. It also has the Velcro straps. My husband feels I walk much better while I’m using it. It most definitely helps foot drop.
@A MyMSTeam Member This is what I have twice. Velcro under knee and lower on shin, slides into shoe, shoe tied or strapped as well would keep you from having your foot drop flat under a pedal. my only problem with driving is being afraid i won't feel the pressure of the pedal (if numb were to take over) but I have actually had NO PROBLEMS driving wearing them both. The platform recoils when walking to gently bounce the toes up as you step. I NEVER trip when wearing them. The front is like wearing shin guards - I never bark my shins on a coffee table either! I would definitely experiment with the driving before I went out on the open road to feel the difference and why am I saying this of course you would...:-)
