Tongue Spasms?

A MyMSTeam Member asked a question 💭
Factoryville, PA

Never had a spasm in my tongue until just now. It lasted for about 15-20 minutes. Does anyone else get them? Kinda weird…hope it doesn’t start cramping up like the rest of my body.

Yuck! Isn't MS great?! 🙂 What normal person would think that because of our "brain disease" we could have issues with our tongue?

But yes, I had that for a month or so. It's something to pay attention to. If it impacts your tongue in a big way, or especially if it interferes with swallowing (swallowing is a complex symphony of muscles working together) then call your doctor.

Mine was actually painful -- it hurt to move my tongue left/right. The "normal" sweeping action of using your tongue to sweep food out between your teeth and gum was difficult, clumsy and painful. Odd stuff.

I dealt with it by doubling down on all of the basics: water intake, diet, sleep, etc. -- making sure all that stuff was right. Made sure I wasn't stressing over anything.

Then I adopted "exercises." I'd look in a mirror and force my tongue to do different things, practiced facial movements (I was getting facial spasms at the same time) and pushed myself to use my tongue.

Over a few weeks things got back to normal.

You could be having some Trigeminal Neuralgia going on! If it's so, pray it stays tolerable. Known as tic douloureux in French meaning the "suicide disease" due to the pain it can cause. I can tell you about THAT! 🥶

I had never heard of "face yoga" so I always likened it to the way actors will morph their face practicing different emotions with their face. But face yoga, face "stretching" or exercise is exactly what's needed.

It makes perfect sense that if stretching works to get our legs, hands or arms pliable and mobile that the same would work with facial or tongue muscles.

The *worst* thing that'll happen is you'll waste time, but at least you'll feel empowered that you're doing something.

Tongue spasms in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be related to several factors:

- Dysphagia: Problems with swallowing can cause weakness or motor control issues in the tongue, leading to accidental biting.
- Dysarthria: Motor problems affecting speech can cause issues with tongue movement, resulting in tongue-biting.
- Numbness: MS can cause numbness in the mouth, tongue, and face, making it easier to bite the tongue accidentally.

If you experience these symptoms, it's important to talk to your doctor.

I see your posts were a while ago but I’ve had the TN this wax just my personal experience and I had my B12 checked and although I have MS I think it was due to B12 deficiency. I started taking it regularly. But funny thing you can get B12 sublingual they melt under your tongue and can act quite quickly within about 15 minutes a couple of times I’ve used up to three and gotten relief and reminded myself to keep taking the regular dose more regularly. After DNA testing I now know I have SNPs that mean I don’t process B12 well. There is quite a bit of research around about B12 deficiency and the awfully named suicide disease (I prefer TN and now think of it as a trigger warning of B12 deficiency). Good luck to you both 😁
