I have started using a stationary bike every day and building some strength training into with 3 pound weights for arms as able. I have significant gait instability, so I have the bike very close to the couch and if I’m feeling unstable, I just hold onto the couch with one side. I started with just five minutes at a time last month and now I’m up to 30 minutes.

Exercise can be beneficial for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Here are some key points:

- Benefits: Exercise can improve muscular endurance, strength, and overall functionality. For example, an eight-week study showed that progressive resistance training increased muscular endurance by 84% and strength by 51% in participants with MS.
- Types of Exercise: Various types of physical activity can be beneficial, including balance-focused workouts and aquatic exercises.
- Safety Tips:
- Always consult your doctor before starting a new exercise regimen.
- Consider working with a physical therapist to create a customized exercise plan.
- Begin workouts with a gradual warm-up and cool down afterward.
- Exercise should be challenging but not painful. Stop if you feel sick or in pain.
- Ensure the exercise space is safe, well-lit, and free of trip hazards.
- Stay hydrated and avoid overheating by exercising during cooler times of the day.
- If you have balance issues, stay within reach of support.

- Constraints: MS symptoms like fatigue, weakness, pain, bladder incontinence, and depression can make it difficult to stay motivated. Side effects of medication can also interfere. Overexertion can exacerbate symptoms, so it's important to listen to your body and rest when needed.

I hear that! A few months ago I started wearing AFO braces because I fall a lot and have significant foot drop. I always strive to be very positive, but the reality is that MS has changed everything about how I exercise.
