I recently had to get a new neurologist. He suggested that I start using a cane. I can't wrap my head around how it will help me with my balance and muscle weakness issues. Does a cane help you walk?

Well then it works. which is what it should do. Just be sure which ever you use is sized properly, meaning that your not hunched over too much or it will eventually hurt your back.

So, if you do topple the cane comes into play. You plant it and stop the fall. Maybe a quad will help which is a cane with 4 feet.

@A MyMSTeam Member I own a rollater that I used when recovering from long Covid, but I haven't used it in 9 months. I am a little off balance because MS makes my body suddenly just turn another direction. Yes a rollater would help that, but I don't want to feel like I've regressed. Plus, I feel like I would hurt whoever is close to the cane when that happens. I don't know if anyone understands what I mean by that. It's not that I need help walking, I pretty much just need help walking straight. It's weird, I know. Well, it's MS weird.🤪

I use on when I’m walking all the time. I use it for stability and it helps me feel more confident walking. I do like using a walker too. I walk much better when I use the walker.

The goal is to keep you from falling and possibly hurt yourself, such as a broken hip for example. It is something for you to lean on and help your gait. It's ok and no shame to use a cane. (Nobody wants to use one) One the bright side, people move out of your way! Have it sized so you don't bend over too much, that seems to be a common problem, and bad for your back.
