I'm going to be having surgery in 2 weeks to remove part of my large intestine. I have been told that 18 inches is damaged and inflamed from diverticulitis. I had been hospitalized for this twice. I'm wondering if anyone has had this kind of surgery and how is the healing process with MS. I'm not a spring chicken and newly diagnosed in June. very nervous about this surgery

Members rallied around someone preparing for large intestine surgery due to diverticulitis, offering both emotional support and practical advice for healing with MS. Several members shared that MS can slow surgical recovery and may trigger flares or relapses under anesthesia, with tips including using a pillow to protect your abdomen, moving as soon as possible after surgery, staying warm-free in the OR, and communicating openly with both your surgeon and neurologist. A recurring theme was that staying physically active beforehand, following doctor's orders closely, and leaning on community support can make a big difference in recovery.

I agree with Monsterma's post. I have SPMS for 34 years and I am a RN,C with a National certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing, Getting up and moving after surgery is a key to starting recovery from the surgery. The nursing staff will help you and will follow your doctor's orders. Follow your doctor's orders to a t! Talk with your doctor prior to your surgery about what to expect and ask your doctor if there is any prior patient that would be willing to talk with you about their experience? But most important is to πŸ™ about the surgery and have family and church to be praying for safe and speedy recovery with minimal pain and complications. Ask and believe that in Jesus name. Can reach me at (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators) When is your surgery?

Hello, this is Linda McGurk of Severna Park, Maryland. I was diagnosed in 1989, when I was 20 years old, I'm 57 now. A few back I had to have a Hysterectomy, the surgery went fine, I woke up to 18 staples in the bottom of my stomach, everything went fine, and you will be fine, don't worry yourself.

First, you're not old, not "old old" anyway. Keep up exercise -- that's a critical item, doubly so for people our age Lisa.

From the little I know about diverticulitis, I would double-down on making sure my diet followed the recommendations for diverticulitis. That would be very important I'd think. There's no excuse to divert from that diet either.

Post surgery, it's important to follow the doctor's recommendations, even if we think we're feeling better. Talk with them if you have concerns.

I think your working out of late will pay dividends, at least it did for me when I had pretty serious surgery like what removing parts sounds like 😊. I was making the nurse helping me in recovery from surgery laugh. When I went to a rehab hospital, I really got into working out again. I think the days before surgery are like waiting to get hit in the face, so anticipating bad stuff. I'm betting you will be fine and do great soon!
