Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) devices are effective tools for managing foot drop and improving walking in MS. These devices use small electrical charges to stimulate muscles that have been weakened, helping you lift your foot while walking. They're typically worn just below the knee, where electrodes contact the peroneal nerve to assist with foot movement during walking.

Studies have shown FES can improve walking performance and gait speed for people with MS. Before starting FES therapy, you'll need an evaluation by a neurologist or physical therapist to determine if it's right for you. If approved, they'll conduct a walking test with the device and provide training on proper usage.

The devices are generally easy to wear and can help with walking longer distances. Unlike traditional ankle-foot braces (AFOs), FES actively stimulates muscles which may help prevent muscle weakness from disuse.
