It's completely understandable to need help โ€” managing MS can feel like a full-time job with all the appointments, medications, and daily challenges. You're not alone in feeling this way.

How do you go about hiring an assistant to help with MS?

It's completely understandable to need help โ€” managing MS can feel like a full-time job with all the appointments, medications, and daily challenges. You're not alone in feeling this way.

First, identify what you need help with:

- Bathing, dressing, or toileting
- Meal preparation and household chores
- Managing appointments and medication refills
- Transportation to infusions or therapy sessions

You have two main options for hiring:

1. Hire directly - Gives you more control and may be more affordable, but takes more time to find and vet someone
2. Work with an agency - They match you with pre-screened caregivers, which is less time-consuming but may cost more

Important considerations:

- Always do background and reference checks
- Interview candidates to ensure compatible personalities
- Look for consistency so you can build trust with your caregiver
- Set clear expectations from the start

Financial assistance may be available through:

- Medicare (if you're over 65 and homebound)
- Medicaid (income-based eligibility)
- Veterans' benefits (if applicable)
- Private insurance (check your specific policy)

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society offers needs assessment worksheets and guidance for both hiring options to help you get started.

I really wish I could help you with this, it's the same tricky situation
wherever you live I think. I'm in New Zealand, small town, and that still
won't be easy. I do have nice friend who changes my bed and does bathroom
once a fortnight, with a small reimbursement. Maybe that might be a
possibility? Even a little help is good. I don't know if you have District
Nurses, local Information Centres, we also have a local Work and Income
centre, which helps people find work, though I've my doubts about the
suitability of the applicants?
I'm sending you a big hug ๐Ÿซ‚ and hoping things work out ๐Ÿ’• ๐Ÿ™
