Hey Laurie so with MS it can be from where lesions are located on the brain. Dont feel like you're going crazy. I did a project in high school on "Pseudobulbar Syndrome" and it's kind of like what you're experiencing and actually really common in MS patients. I'd talk to your doctors about it to see what they recommend if it's getting out of control for you

You're not crazy at all! What you're experiencing sounds like pseudobulbar affect (PBA), a neurological condition that affects many people with MS. It causes uncontrollable laughing or crying episodes that don't match how you're actually feeling or the situation you're in.
PBA happens when MS lesions develop in parts of the brain that help control emotions. Studies suggest it affects anywhere from 1 in 10 to up to 50 percent of people with MS, so you're definitely not alone.
Many MyMSTeam members have shared similar experiences:
- One member described laughing uncontrollably to the point of choking
- Another shared waking up in tears for no real reason
- Some experience both laughing and crying at the same time, which can be confusing and scary
These episodes typically last several minutes and are:
- Not under your control
- Unrelated to your actual feelings
- Not triggered by anything specific
- Different from how you normally express emotions
- Often embarrassing or uncomfortable
The good news is that PBA is treatable. There's an FDA-approved medication called Nuedexta that can significantly reduce symptoms, though it may take 4-5 weeks to work. Some members have also found relief with antidepressants like Cymbalta.
Talk to your neurologist about what you're experiencing. They can use questionnaires to diagnose PBA and discuss treatment options with you.
