Your neurologist will start by taking a detailed medical history, asking about:
- Your symptoms and when they started
- How often symptoms occur and their severity
- Family history of MS
- Any previous neurological episodes
They'll perform a thorough neurological exam testing your eyes, reflexes, coordination, strength, and sensation to look for signs of nerve damage.
Imaging and Additional Tests
MRI scans are crucial for diagnosis. They show lesions (areas of damage) in your brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. The pattern and timing of these lesions help determine your MS type.
Your doctor may also order:
- Blood tests to rule out other conditions
- Evoked potential tests to measure electrical activity in your brain
- Lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to analyze cerebrospinal fluid
Determining MS Type
About 85% of people are initially diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS, while 15% have primary progressive MS. Your type is determined by how your symptoms have progressed over time and what the MRI shows about when damage occurred.
