What questions should you ask your doctor when first diagnosed with MS that you might not think of?

Getting diagnosed with MS can feel overwhelming, and it's easy to forget important questions during appointments. Many people with MS wish they had asked more about the invisible symptoms early on.

Questions about symptoms you might not think to mention:

* How do I talk about cognitive issues, fatigue, or bladder problems that aren't obvious?
* What mental health symptoms are common with MS, and how can they be treated?
* Which symptoms can actually be treated, even if they seem minor?

Questions about your treatment plan:

* Is my current disease-modifying therapy (DMT) effectively treating my MS, and how do you determine this?
* What are all my treatment options, and what are the pros and cons of each?
* How will we know if I need to switch treatments in the future?
* What strategies can help me manage daily MS symptoms?

Questions about managing medications:

* Why am I on each medication, and what does it do?
* Are there ways to simplify my medication routine?
* How can I manage side effects from my treatments?

A MyMSTeam member shared helpful advice: "When seeing my doctor, it helps to have my husband with me, as he remembers better than I do what the doctor tells me."

Pro tip: Write down all your questions before appointments. Bring a list of current medications and supplements with proper doses. Consider bringing someone with you to help remember what's discussed. Don't be afraid to say, "I have more questions, and they're really important."

The first neurologist I saw, I asked about diet and vitamins. His reply, a healthy diet and he didn't know about vitamins. The first question I asked my now neurologist was "is it hereditary"

I asked the one thing that really mattered to me - 'Will I ever play Rugby again'? He looked a bit surprised, but answered 'It depends how much you want to'!
The besty answer ever - I played twice more, and have 'wanted to' for many different challenges now - Half Marathon, Parachuting, SCAD Dive - (185ft freefall into a net), abseiling, and now 1083 miles hobbling with a splint and two walking sticks (over 5 years).
