My speech is becoming worse- I’m starting to talk like I’ve had a small stroke- and it gets worse under stress and or being tired to the point of having trouble speaking at all. Is this a normal symptom of ms?

Please discuss this with your neurologist, they can refer you to a Speech language pathologist. They can do an evaluation to figure out the cause and then you can do therapy with them to fix the issue.

Is difficulty talking a normal MS symptom?

Yes, speech problems are a common symptom of MS. About 25 to 40 percent of people with MS experience speech difficulties, and studies show that nearly 76 percent of people with MS experience communication changes during their disease course.

Why does this happen?

MS lesions can damage parts of the brain and brain stem that control speech muscles. This damage can affect your diaphragm, lips, tongue, and the coordination needed for clear speech. The most common speech problem in MS is dysarthria, which affects about 40 percent of people with the condition.

Why does stress and fatigue make it worse?

Many people with MS notice their speech difficulties fluctuate throughout the day and worsen with certain triggers:

- Fatigue (especially at night when tired)
- Emotional stress
- During MS flare-ups
- When under pressure or having to think quickly

A MyMSTeam member shared: "I lose my ability to speak quite often when I am emotionally stressed or have a flare-up. My words slur, stutter, or I mispronounce a lot."

What should you do?

Talk to your neurologist about these changes. They can refer you to a speech-language therapist who can help you manage these symptoms through techniques like breath control exercises, speaking slowly and clearly, and maintaining good posture while speaking.
