I was told by my Ms doctor the Mediterranean Diet is recommended , but plant based is the best. I was told to eat low salt as that causes inflammation, and stay away from regular and diet soda.

When I asked my first doctor that question, he just told me to eat as healthy as I could.

What are the best foods and nutrition tips for managing MS?

There's no single "MS diet" that's been proven to treat or cure MS, but eating well can help reduce inflammation, support energy levels, and improve overall well-being. The good news is that small, consistent changes can make a real difference.

Here are some of the best foods to focus on:

- Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring) β€” rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may help reduce inflammation
- Colorful fruits and vegetables β€” packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals
- Whole grains (oats, brown rice, quinoa) β€” great for fiber and digestion
- Healthy fats (olive oil, avocados, walnuts, flaxseed) β€” support brain and heart health
- Vitamin D-rich foods (salmon, egg yolks, mushrooms, tuna) β€” some research suggests vitamin D may help reduce MS symptoms
- Legumes (beans, lentils, chickpeas) β€” provide both fiber and protein Here are some practical nutrition tips worth keeping in mind:

- Follow an anti-inflammatory eating plan β€” the Mediterranean diet is widely recommended for people with MS, focusing on plant-based foods, lean proteins, and healthy fats
- Limit saturated fats β€” high saturated fat intake has been linked to increased relapse rates
- Reduce processed foods and added sugars β€” these can promote inflammation
- Stay hydrated β€” even if bladder concerns make this tricky, dehydration can worsen constipation and other symptoms
- Get enough fiber β€” bowel issues are common with MS, and fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help
- Monitor your Vitamin D levels β€” work with your care team to check levels via blood tests; don't exceed 4,000 IU daily without medical guidance

A MyMSTeam member put it well: *"My takeaway is not what diet is best, but what diet is best for you."*

Always talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian before making major dietary changes, and remember β€” diet supports your treatment but doesn't replace it.
