Great question! When it comes to MS, steroids (corticosteroids) are really meant to be a short-term tool — not a long-term solution. A typical course for a serious relapse usually lasts just 3 to 5 days.

The reason doctors keep it short is because the longer steroids are used, the greater the risk of serious side effects, including:

- Thinning of bones (osteoporosis)
- Weight gain
- High blood pressure
- Increased risk of infection
- Hormonal disruption
- Cataracts It's also worth knowing that steroids don't actually change the long-term outcome of a relapse — they just help speed up recovery. So if a relapse is mild, a neurologist may even suggest a watch-and-wait approach instead.

If steroids are needed repeatedly or for longer periods, that's a conversation to have with a neurologist, who can weigh the benefits against the risks and explore other options if needed.
