Experiencing both internal and external tremors with MS is absolutely something worth discussing with a neurologist — especially since the pain makes it more urgent. Both types of tremors can be linked to MS, as nerve damage and lesions in areas of the brain that control movement (like the cerebellum and thalamus) can cause a range of sensations.

That said, painful tremors are a signal that this needs medical attention sooner rather than later. Here's what's worth knowing:

- Internal tremors feel like buzzing or vibrating inside the body — not visible from the outside
- External (visible) tremors involve uncontrollable shaky or jerky movements
- Both can stem from the same nerve damage caused by MS
- When tremors become painful, that's a key reason to seek medical advice promptly

A neurologist may suggest medications like gabapentin or pregabalin, which are used for nerve-related pain and may help manage these sensations. In the meantime, some things that MyMSTeam members have found helpful include:

- Reducing stress through yoga, exercise, or therapy
- Improving sleep quality — better rest has helped some members reduce vibration sensations
- Avoiding overexertion, as symptoms often worsen at the end of a tiring day

Please don't wait on this one — the pain factor makes it important to loop in your care team as soon as possible.

I have internal vibrations but they aren't painful

Tremors can be a symptom of either parkinson's, parkinsonian's (similar but not quite) or MS. Vibrations sensations have been felt by more than a few people on this site so MS can cause both.
