Sleep disorders are very common with MS — research shows around 60% of people with MS experience at least one. These disruptions can make cognitive symptoms significantly worse, so it's a really important area to pay attention to.
Common sleep disorders associated with MS include:
- Insomnia – difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Restless legs syndrome (RLS) – uncomfortable urge to move legs, especially at night
- Narcolepsy – excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden urges to sleep
- Sleep apnea – disrupted breathing during sleep
- REM sleep behavior disorder
- Circadian rhythm disorder
- Nocturia – frequent nighttime urination Narcolepsy specifically can cause daytime napping, which then disrupts nighttime sleep and can lead to insomnia — a bit of a frustrating cycle.
Poor sleep directly impacts cognitive function, including memory, concentration, and processing speed. These already overlap with MS cognitive symptoms, so disrupted sleep can make "brain fog" feel much worse. Depression and anxiety are also closely tied to both sleep problems and cognitive difficulties in MS. About half of people with MS experience depression, which can further reduce the brain's ability to process information effectively.
The good news is that treating sleep disorders can actually improve fatigue, cognitive function, and overall quality of life. It's worth raising any sleep concerns with a neurologist, as there are strategies and treatments that can genuinely help.

Hi there, a person with MS could possibly have narcolepsy. Go to a sleep clinic if you are able and get assessed for sleep disorders.
