It was my sorest subject. My father was an industrial engineer, @ GM. Anyhow, he balanced the checkbook to a T, dotted all I's, and crossed all T's. He taught me right on "how to balance my checkbook", I couldn't be bothered. I detested m.a.t.h.! When I balanced my own checkbook without his help, I rounded up or down the dollar amount, so I would know what the hell was in my A/C, (approximately). I still can't stand math but I marvel at it now.

Members had a lot of fun sharing their math experiences, with opinions ranging from lifelong love of numbers to absolute dread of anything past basic arithmetic. Several members opened up about how conditions like dyslexia, dyscalculia, and MS-related cognitive fog made math harder over time, while others shared how great teachers, family tutors, or returning to school as adults helped them find a new appreciation for it. A recurring theme was that struggles in school did not define anyone's worth or success, and many found humor and warmth in bonding over shared math woes.

I taught math at the middle school level. Loved it, till I didn't. Had a principal how always keep a track on what and how I was teaching. My lessons were not always on point, but when it came to my students state test scores I was ahead of the curve. That's what mattered to me. THE STUDENTS.

One other thing I wanted to share: when I was in school I had to get a degree in Math to study computer science, there was no separate CS discipline at that time (the idea of a "terminal" back then was considered high tech, most programs were typed on cards... yes really! The last math class I had to take was advanced statistics. I was dreading it because the intro statistics class had a bad teacher and the topic seemed really boring. But the teacher for advanced statistics was amazing. He was not an easy grader but he made the topic so interesting and gave such good lectures he made it very understandable. He would be writing on the black board very long notes while also talking fast, and everything on the board was completely legible. Every once in a while when he did a proof he would just take a breath, stand back from the board and say to the class "isn't that beautiful?" and to my amazement, I agreed with him! It WAS beautiful! I think that's another problem with math. Many math teachers just aren't very good teachers but guys like my statistics teacher can make complex topics quite understandable. Another example is the free online class Gilbert Strang from MIT has about Linear Algebra. I had read countless of Wikipedia articles, text books, and I just wasn't getting it. The very first day of the first class Strang went over some very basic concepts and in 20 minutes I learned more about the topic than the 20 or more hours I had spent up to that time trying to understand it. I'm so grateful for the teachers like that I've been lucky to learn from.

My SAT score on the Math portion probably is what got me into JMU, lol! Not strong enough to want to pursue Engineering but good enough for a BBA and then I got an MBA
