I feel worthless because of having to file for disabilty. i have always been a very energetic person and never stopped. NOw when I get off of work I am too tired to do much of anything. It depresses me because I feel like I should be able to do all the things I used to do. HOw do people deal with it, and are you embarassed to tell people your on disability. I look fine but have major cognitive issues and Fatigue. People do not see that.
I hope that you understand that I understand when I say you MUST GET PAST living your life based on what others think. Living with this disease will help you with that. You haven't failed because you need the benefits of having worked. I have always worked. I was 10 years old when I got my first job. I'm college educated and before ms, had a very high IQ.
How you deal with the hand you have been given doesn't mean that you, as a person and the all of the things you have done are gone. This new hand of cards means you learn this game. Clinging to the old will only cause you to get worse.
Just begin to allow yourself to accept the change. I hope that this site will help you adjust to the challenge of change. I am praying for you.
You are not worthless!! None of us are! Do you have family? Pets? Friends? Ask them how important you are? You are not a job! You're a human being! I am not a robot or a technician for computers anymore, either! I AM a husband and father of two boys whom I love with all my heart! I walk for them!
I agree with Sherry, the road with ms is difficult enough without having to worry or consider others opinions about you or any disabilities you have. My best advice so far is, put yourself first for a while until you get in a better frame of mind.....go to counseling if you can't get there yourself.
"It is none of my business what others think about me".
Oh man, it was such a relief when I finally went on Disability. I couldn't have cared less what anyone thought about it. I worked for 30 years, paid my taxes, paid into Social Security. So, my turn to retire came earlier than planned, but there was NO WAY I could work another day. My younger kids were 5 and 10 years old, and I was fine with being a stay-at-home mom. I didn't see it as a failure, just a new life path.
As all others said before me....you are definitely more than your job and should not be embarrassed to tell anyone that you are on disability. That said, I was once a perfectionist, workaholic professional who thought she could do it all until I found out I couldn't because my MS said "No". And you know what? I am glad I had to stop working and take care of myself. I am a better more aware person to my family and friends and feel so much more worthwhile doing what I need to do for myself and my family by taking the best care of me. Good luck and God bless you on your path through life....you are so much more than an employee.
