Members responded to the question of whether comforting words or actions help, with many sharing that while kind words feel good in the moment, what they truly want is understanding and acknowledgment of their daily struggles with MS. A recurring theme was feeling unsupported or dismissed by family, with many members saying this online community has become their most reliable source of comfort and connection. Several members shared practical strategies that helped them cope, including setting clear communication boundaries with loved ones, using humor, leaning on faith, and finding joy in grandchildren or pets.

Thanks for all the input! It was just a random thought my mom said, but after all the comments I would like to expand a bit: first, to me, understanding is a sort of comfort so I'm good with that. Second, I feel so bad for those of you without a good support system. I am surrounded by love so I am not in need there but I am greatly uplifted by all your kind posts. I do, however, offer my ears and shoulders to anyone who needs to vent or cry or any such thing. Being helpful fuels my hatefire for this disease and keeps me going! If you need my services, just ask;)

I don't get comforting words from anyone. My family acts like MS doesn't exist and expects me to keep up and do everything they do. One family member even told me that I was abusing disability and should get off my butt and go back to work. I am on a walker indoors and a power chair outside. If it wasn't for this website I would be all alone.

If I am having a really bad day and I'm in pain, knowing that someone loves me and doesn't like to see me this way is always a help. It helps my mood, even if it doesn't help the pain. Depression is common with us who have M.S. and having someone who supports us is always helpful.

I would rather people be understanding then try to comfort me.

My people just don't understand this MS and it effects. I don't get comforting words.
