My Dr. suggested a Baclofen Pump for spasticity. First I heard of it. Would appreciate any information or comments on likes, dislikes, side effects, etc.
I'm on my second pump, they come in (2) sizes. First time am , second larger one. That depends on medication concentration and how often u need refilled. If more than one medication in pump, it denatures quicker
I'm on my second pump, good for about 5 yrs, then battery needs replaced. I was in oral baclofen, like 60mg/day and it got to a point where the side effects were just knocking me on my ARSE, needed nothing more to sedate me, plus with each oral increase, it just wasn't holding me. I have MUCH spasticity in my legs, about as limber as tree trunks, with or without baclofen. But, with the pump, which is implanted surgically on either side, lower abdomen. The catheter goes from pump around to back, and medication is programmed/dispensed and dosage adjustments. Medication is dispensed in the intrathecal spaces. I like that you don't have the side effects, like you do with. The oral medications. Does it work? Don't know, no change in spasticity...but I do know that I usually have to go week ahead of scheduled refill tones, as I fall more. They did say when meds are combined, like o have baclofen and morph r it denatures faster, thus becoming less effective than getting baclofen alone but I personal feel I can't take the chance of not taking it, and risk any more falls. At times frustrating, on second pump, still playing with dosage. Refills done in office every 2-3 months...depending what size pump needle inserted into abdomen, old taken out of pump, new inserted then reprogrammed. I feel if there was a chance of improving the quality of my life ...."let's gitter done! Feel free to ask any questions. Surgery is done outpatient and refills in office
One person described it as a larger pacemaker. The tube goes to the spine instead. Out patient same day procedure I learned. Most people I have been talking to say it is becoming more common with MS patients. Personally I only have one foot in the water! But if I continue this downward spiral I might be all in.
Ok, I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. You said that the pump is in the front and the tubing goes around to your spine. I hope that they are subqtanious. However, how deep are they. Can you feel them from the outside? Does the tubing have to be replaced? Sorry, my Dr mentioned this to me as well because I have extensive spacsticity as well. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around the logistics of it. When it was first mentioned to me I got a visual of those monsters in sifi movies that have tubes coming out of various places and the hero disconnects them to defeat the monster. 😀
