How many people were misdiagnosed? What were you told you had? How many were diagnosed correctly the first time?
From diagnosis until today I have had a total of 4 MRI scans - first initially for MS. The second was for my Trigeminal Neuralgia. I was suffering a flare up (starting to relapse) last year and my former Neurologist requested an MRI because I had this 'pinch' in my spine. My current Neurologist tried to cancel this MRI until I insisted he go ahead with it (as I had suspected that all my lesions would be found in my spine). When the results of this third MRI came through my Neurologist was so surprised at the number of lesions that were evident in my back, he sent me for my forth MRI to get more detail. It has only taken me 24 years to get Neurologist to scan my back and not my head. I know my body better than anyone else. They should have been listening to me.
We are all fighters. Despite hearing some awful things, we keep pressing for answers and treatment for our disease and then , we fight for every bit of normalcy and quality of life that we can. Maybe, God really does give his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers.
I was misdiagnosed for the first 8 years. I even had one doctor tell me that I had a stroke. It wasn't until, many new lesions appeared. I now have lesions in my brain, spine and spinal fluid. When my first MRI showed a lesion in my brain, I was so upset. The very next day when I woke up I ended up paralyzed from my waist down for the next 4 years and my boys were babies. One was 1 and the other was 2 years old. It was very upsetting and frustrating. My first MS doctor told me that I would never walk again at that point. I said we would see about that. Like I said, 4 years later, I worked very hard at home by myself to get myself up and walking. Of course I wear leg braces and use a cane, but I am out of my wheelchair!! I hope this is helpful to you!!
@A MyMSTeam Member I was diagnosed as transverse Myelitis 38 years ago and only was changed to MS about 8 years ago. Been a long painful journey! I think they finally have it right! Really wish I had had some of this treatment before!
I don't understand how some doctors have the nerve to say the things they do. I have been properly diagnosed but my condition really escalated during the time between misdiagnosed and proper treatment. I also believe that it causes a type of PTSD to have doctors undermine your mental health.
