As an aside, it I isn't well known, but mental health issues are considered and awarded SSDI. Depression and anxiety, bipolar, etc.

SS tabulates how much you will be paid by your annual donations to date. You do get Medicare, too. When collecting from a private disability company, they will probably decrease the amount you receive from them by the SSDI amt you receive from the Gov't.
Check to see if your private disability will end at a certain age. My private disability stops paying at age 65. That doesn't help unless you were young when you retire. It sure sounded like a long time when I was 42!

Fortunately when I retired from the teacher retirement system in 1986 I was able to keep my insurance then. That has been a blessing

I have disability through work like you but I also purchased a separate supplimental disability policy that covers what my work policy does not. It has a partial disability rider that still pays partial benefits if I can still work but only part time or in some other capcity which pays less than my current profession. It costs about 3500/year. However here is the catch, I purchased it prior to my MS diagnosis. I have since my diagnosis been able to increase coverage. The difficulty is having a company not turn you down with an existing MS diagnosis and/or having to pay a million bucks! May still be worth looking in to because all they can do is turn you down. I live in TN.
