I as well have a strange sensation in my throat, to me it feels like my esophagus is filled with foam...No allergies, or gabapentin use....I see a pulmonologist, and I thought the same about dairy....
I was ruled out, he referred me to several studies that said, I was wrong about dairy......My husband has COPD, and i wanted to cut out his ice cream....The doctor said, dairy is fine....
I have swallow wrong at times, and was able to cough up thin liquids.......
My neuro said, It was due to this disease....So..... I have to be careful...
Stay safe, and well All....Sharon

Abbey, tip to get rid of mucus, drink anything hot: hot tea, lemon flavored water. Spit the mucus out. Not very good manners but worked for me.

I'm going to add my two cents. Sorry Abby it's not about the mucus it's about the last reply someone added about their husband having trouble swallowing Anne Sutherland.I would like to add some unconventional tips.
In the hospital they will give you IV fluid. That is fine I'm not a nurse. follow what you believe. Here are my unconventional tips only obviously, If your husband is alert enough. A few ice chips to put under the tongue. Under tongue gets absorbed into body. Or a bite of a popsicle.
I Believe this will keep him fluid enough to live. It worked for me. No IV fluids.

Chin to chest to swallow.
Honey thickener powder will not quench thirst. I was so thirsty.
Take pills with a spoonful of applesauce . Bit of a juggle : chin up to push it down, chin down to swallow, chin up to make sure it all went down.

Put honey on boo boos

I experienced a brief time where it was hard to swallow and choked a few times. Not sure what that was but it passed!

I choke on my own spit, one time my boyfriend started giving me the Heimlich maneuver because when he asked me if I was ok I could only shake my head that I was alright. It's the scariest feeling when I can't breathe! I know it's not the same as you're problem but it sounds JUST as scary! I Say at least once a day that I HATE THIS DISEASE!!! I know we're supposed to look upbeat and say I'm fighting everyday but most days it just SUCKS!!!!
