My balance sucks too, but not as bad as it did 2 years ago. You have to challenge yourself and do things that you don't find easy, where you bend, twist and alter your head position. It'll be uncomfortable and you may well throw up but it's all part of retraining the brain. I'm talking simple things like painting a fence in my case, obviously you don't want to be doing anything that puts you in danger.
I use a stick if I'm going further than about 50 yards, more to advertise to others that I'm a bit unsteady and give me a bit of space. Working on your leg strength is also a MUST, you have to find the determination within yourself and develop a pro active attitude probably far greater than your once able bodied self.
If you do nothing and give in to it it'll be downhill all the way for the rest of your life, I went from being able to walk 10ft to a mile purely by using an exercise bike regularly for 6 months, it's not great but there's a world of difference in the quality of life between the 2.

A cane seems to be a little less obvious and helped me when I just needed help here and there to rectify and be able to rely on "my 3rd leg". A walker (for me) is a assisting apparatus becaus my balance in out of whack on both sides. I have (with much surfing the net )realized I needed one that also had a seat and could be converted into a wheelchair if I completely got tuckered out. So far I've just used it to push and help me be able to walk semi safely. But my 10 yr old (who's already 5'2) is itching for me to convert so he can push me๐Ÿ™‚

I went from a walking stick, to a cane, & now I have a stylish (jk) walker/wheelchair converter. If you're at the walking stick phase----do whatever will help you!

I use a walking stick - I started with a cane, but found that I was too hunched over - I stand tall with a walking stick (I use 1 with suspension) And, I don't look so oldladyish. Yet.

Try to strengthen your abdominal musculature if you feel well enough ,it will help with balance. Also walk slowly to avoid falls.
