Has anyone else experienced hair loss? I can tell that my hair is thinning because I have very thick hair.

Hi, Tarashider, hair loss is something I unfortunately know a lot about. First, as far as I can tell, the drugs we are on for MS are not causing the hair loss. The hair loss is caused by chronic anemia which is secondary to immune diseases like MS. Unfortunately, the anemia will not go away until the MSl and the MS is not going away. Therefore, we are losing hair. In fact, I am going bald.

Your doctor should be checking your blood at least every three months if you are on Tysabri for the JV antibody. If not, a routine CBC will show if you are anemic. Anemia is very common with immune system diseases, although no one seems to know why. I have had what is called pernicious anemia (B12 deficiency) since at least 2007. I then developed ferritan (iron deficiency) anemia shortly thereafter. My hair loss started at about the same time. The problem is not that we are not getting enough B12 and iron. It is an absorption problem. I have taken enough iron over the years to build a ship! It will not help.

Unfortunately, as time goes on the hair loss is increasing. You can now clearly see my scalp and I imagine by the time fall is truly here I will have to wear a wig. It is a difficult thing to accept and it makes me very angry. However, there is not anything medically that can be done.

I do see a hematologist at least twice a year who keeps an eye on the anemia. My anemia worsens dramatically recently and I had to have an iron infusion. I'll tell you, I felt absolutely wonderful for about a week. Then, it all went back to normal, and I am exhausted all the time.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. Unfortunately, that's life with MS.

I lost a LOT of hair when I was on Betaseron. I got off it almost a year ago and my hair started growing back. I am now on Tysabri and haven't noticed anymore problems with my hair falling out.
