What’s up MS community, I would use a few of your advices.
This week, I started relapsing a little and I know I have to start using my cane that I’ve been hiding for too long.
Even without the relapse, I know the cane is a great help but my head doesn’t listen.
I hate having to explain to people other than my close friends why I’m suddenly using a cane.
I’ve always hidden it and found a reason for my occasional weird walking or loss of balance.
But I feel like I should stop being so… read more
First, you don't owe anyone an explanation. Explain or not, it's your choice.
I'm not sure if you feel embarrassed or self-conscious about it? I don't want to assume.
I felt very embarrassed about it. I started having to use a cane before I was diagnosed. It felt like I didn't have a good reason for needing it. Also, I'm fat so it was like, great, everyone will assume I'm just a fatty who can't walk because I'm fat. Awesome!
Once I was diagnosed, being able to actually know why I needed it really helped me. Now, I don't worry about it.
I put a bunch of stickers for causes I support on my cane. I wanted to see it as awesome instead of embarrassing. Plus, it's always with me so why not use the real estate?
I focus on the good stuff about it...like sometimes it makes people more helpful and kind. At first, I was like...I can do it myself! Now I'm like...accept people wanting to be kind. We can all use more kindness.
I think it's a process of accepting that it's not something to be ashamed of. I'm not ashamed of wearing glasses so why think that way about a cane? Realizing things like that helped me.
Just explain anf tell them like it is and after that walk with your chin up!..
I don’t. Mind. It cause I can explain. My condition. Then people. Know why & undsyand.
Stand tall, be proud of what you are achieving despite having MS....it isn't easy, but being open about it changes your own perspective....it isn't a dirty little secret, and you are not alone in feeling uneasy...I promise you that when you do open up about it, that you will feel a whole lot better. Some will be negative, but most will be totally supportive and Impressed!
Just tell them and walk proud x
