Hi everyone. Does any of you work from home? I really want to work but from home
If you go to www.nationalmssociety.org, you can type working from home in the search bar. The first thing that came up looked like some good information. You could contact the local MS Society, too. Non-profits and governments are interested in hiring disabled people and working from home could be a reasonable accommodation, which is required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. Since you're in Los Angeles, there might be more opportunities than there are in a smaller place. I'm interested in working from home, too. I work part time, but not that many hours and I need more money. I was looking at your updates and I was wondering if your husband could go back to work and someone else could be there with you while he is working. Maybe the MS Society could help. There are also government programs that will pay for someone to help and there are some people who like to volunteer to do this. I'm interested to learn about others who are working from home and how they found these jobs, too. Good question!
I have been wanting to work from home. I always think are they reputable.
I am just transitioning to working from home. At first when I had to disability retire from my school district, it was pretty deflating. But a good friend who also has MS (and who has a very successful consulting business) shared a book with me called Pivot. This book made the transition seem much more manageable and helped me visualize how I could still utilize the skills I've acquired over the last 22 years but in a different way that will work for me given my current needs.
For now, I'm just doing pro bono work so that I can see how many hours I can realistically manage and to build a client base (or more so, gain satisfied client reviews to drive future referrals). I'm also moving soon (and still considering two very different locations several hours apart) so I don't want to commit to something 100% too quickly. This "gift of time" has really helped me to learn to be patient with myself and also to take the time needed to explore all options. Numerous doors that are pretty exciting are opening for me as I network, and I'm certain that after my move, I'll be ready to jump on the right opportunity. For me that means making my own schedule, ensuring I can work during the hours I feel best, etc.
Hang in there! Hopefully you can get some disability funds to help with the transition if needed. I was super stressed until I finally secured some funds - it took 6 months and it's not a lot, but at least I know I have something coming in to help my partner so he doesn't have to pay all our bills....that funding assistance combined with the pro bono work helped immensely with my overall feelings of being a contributing member of society!
Good luck with the transition! And consider reading Pivot if you're at all feeling depressed that all your current skills are obsolete - it will walk you through some thoughtful activities that will help you find creative ways to utilize your skills. XX
