When diagnosed I was told and reassured that MS is NOT a fatal disease. I starting working at a Cemetery and I absolutely LOVE IT❣️Since February I found to certificates where the coroner had “Multiple Sclerosis” as the cause of death. It has been unsettling to me that they would be MS as the cause. Why do you think they said MS was the cause of death when this is not suppose to be a fatal disease?
MS is NOT a cause of death but can lend itself to an end of life situation. It makes me angry to hear that some one state MS as a cause of death. Just another sign of public ignorance of multiple sclerosis. That is why awareness is so important. Am I preaching to the choir?😲Sorry for the outburst.
She is correct. MS is not the cause of any death, but can be what leads to it. A weak immune system means dying from something you caught. Or a person maybe having a tremor and they fall and bump their head. But it's not MS.
@A MyMSTeam Member You already know there are death certificates with MS as Cause Of Death (COD), doctors decide what they want to put as the reason(s); so they can put anything they want. Case in point, my dad had advanced Parkinson’s but decided to stop eating because he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life in a nursing home. What the doctor put on death certificate for cause of death: Advanced Parkinson’s and failure to thrive; and before you ask, yes, it was a Kaiser doctor.
In a nutshell, in case you don’t want to read article, it says some people believe MS can be fatal, reasoning goes if you didn’t have MS then you wouldn’t get complications that could kill you. They used the comparison to a different disease, AIDS; the person may die as a result of a complication from it, AIDS will be still be listed on death certificate.
I also believe before there were any MS treatments MS was mentioned as COD on death certificates. If any of you watched “Scorpion” TV series about geniuses who solved problems governments needed help with, maybe you remember when lead character Walter’s sister Megan, who had MS and he was going to find a cure so she wouldn’t have to die. She was diagnosed years before when there weren’t any MS treatments available.
One of the recurring stories on the show focused on her romantic relationship with another character, Sylvester, who married her shortly before she died to keep her brother from doing things she didn’t want done and Walter’s acceptance of her impending death. The show did this by showing her in her present state, then decline and finally death. The writing was excellent and acting very realistic in my opinion. I’m sure her COD was listed as MS on her death certificate, but we’ll never know. I figured out which episodes include MS story, so if you’d like me to post them just let me know. In the end what gets written down on your death certificate as Cause Of Death is whatever the doctor decides to put.
I have seen it when it has said, from complications of MS. In the end,we all die,so I figure they will blame it on the illness like everything else they blame on it,while we are still alive and kicking.
A great family friend is 86, wheelchair-bound her entire adult life, a very healthy woman. Do not let the diagnosis of MS scare you in that way. Yes, having MS sucks, different for all. Enjoy your life and do recognise that no one knows what will take their life, just live your life.
