I just listened to an educational program on MSViewsandNews.org . It is an excellent educational/support organization, but I heard something today that kinda surprised me. DMT's (disease modifying therapies) have proven incalculable in treatment of MS I know, but I heard a very experienced MS provider say that even with all of the medications available, still disease progression has not been helped. Does anyone have any input on this subject?
Yes, thanks for sharing - I've read that too! So disheartening! That's largely why I started seeing an integrated medicine DR as well as my neurologists to see what they could offer...and I have to say, after being under their care, (and the other services they've recommended like acupuncture & chiropractor), I've had no new MS symptoms in almost 2 years, and a LOT of my old ones are gone. I still take my western DMT faithfully 2x/day, but I've definitely received the most symptom relief from eastern practices. XX
Unfortunately, the whole idea of all DMT's were to be drugs that slow the progression of MS. Sadly, no doctor or individual knows which DMT will work for every MS patient meaning the DMT you're prescribed is a SWAG ( scientific wild @A MyMSTeam Member guess). There is credible evidence of any MS drug reversing MS progression as it's all about slowing the progression down. I didn't research this, it's just what I've observed from having this thing. I've tried meds that didn't work and taking no meds and have found that it's best for me to keep trying DMTs until I find 1 that I think works. With that said, the patient needs to tell the doctor what's not working. What I mean is I knew I felt the exact same or worse, not MS symptom wise, when I took some DMTs. I realized right when I found the DMT that worked 4 me this truth. I know I'll need to change DMTs again but for now.... All of us with MS drew the Shemp and we all must realize there is no right answer but the DMTs we have now can help albiet for less time than we would like
While I have not done anything but DMT's ..I did not start them till I turned 30...dx. at 21...did that short time interval...make that much difference?
I think we can tell that DMT's play an important role in dealing with MS because of how much "better" the MS population is today than they were before DMT's. Professional medical providers who have been around for years have been able to visually compare how we were then, and how we are now. I will take slower for now, until more treatments are discovered.
DMDs are only meant to slow progression not stop it, so that’s good I guess.
