Primary Progressive MS (PPMS) is characterized by steady disease progression from onset, without relapses and remissions. The progression can be categorized in 4 ways:

• Inactive without progression - Symptoms stable, no disability increase
• Inactive with progression - No new symptoms but disability increases
• Active without progression - Worsening/new symptoms but no disability increase
• Active with progression - New symptoms and increased disability over 12 months Two key factors may help predict PPMS progression:

1. Age at onset: Younger people typically have slower progression and longer time until disability

2. Initial symptoms: Those who start with only sensory symptoms may progress more slowly than those with multiple symptoms like muscle weakness and balance problems

The good news is that MS typically progresses quite slowly - less than 25% of people with PPMS reached significant disability milestones within 5 years of diagnosis. Working with your healthcare provider to create a management plan can help slow disease progression.
