After a co-worker applied for short term disability and some FMLA, I looked into what benefits I actually have and I am paying extra for Long term disability. How many of you have that as well? Short term disability is paid by the organization. I dont forsee needing it for a long while, but you never know, right? Im only 42 and I cannot believe Im planning like I am..even estate planning.

You can never plan ahead too much or too soon. I would definitely get the LTD coverage.

I believe I neglected to say in my previous answer om this question that fortunately I am receiving 2 checks a month SSDI & a paid long term disability check. Must be 60 percent of my salary. That extra check sure helps!

I'm on my former employers LTD after taking advantage of their STD policy. I never thought I would need a plan because, well, I'm me and have a long history of fighting through things. Still. as a former CPA, it's never a bad idea to at least understand what your options may 1 day be. Everyone with MS has heard it's an unpredictable disease but until the day saying that is talking about you, it isn't real and rightfully so. Still, understanding your options isn't a bad idea. I, for 1, hope you never learn how unpredictable MS can be and that isn't at all meant as a dig. We all have MS symptoms but, for example, I never thought the disease would ever effect my thinking until it did (I quickly got over it. guess MS started effecting the part of my brain controlling give a). Look, it might happen and might not but it's stupid not to understand your options. Relying on your company's HR department isn't a good idea. I'm not saying that department isn't full of kind, well meaning folks. I'm saying they don't deal with LTD that often and that showed for my experience. So learn now in case you need to use LTD later
