A diet of higher fat/lower carbs with controlled protein levels is said by some to improve MS symptoms. Any opinions or experience?

My DR who has MS treats herself and her patients predominantly through food and supplements. She suggests the MITO food plan from functional medicine institute. I'll post the link below. It's "best" according to her because it does several things specific for folks with MS, the big ones being super anti-inflammatory and that the foods specifically target mitochondria which aggressively battles fatigue. I feel really great when I eat this way. I'm about 85% compliant - and definitely notice a regression if I step away from it for a time. It's possible to go Keto with this food plan as well if you are interested in weight loss. For those of us carrying some extra cushion around, it's beneficial to try to lose a few, especially if we have mobility issues (or one day might!). But the plan focuses mostly on healthy eating. Nothing pre-packaged. And no high allergen foods (until you clear them doing an elimination diet). Speaking of - doing the elimination diet really helped me! I discovered a few foods that my body is highly reactive to (and not in a good way!) that came back negative on traditional allergy testing. Now that I know to avoid those foods, things are MUCH better!
Here's the functional medicine page. You can access all of their plans, like the MITO, and elimination here....as well as recipes, shopping lists, meal plans, etc.

@A MyMSTeam Member I agree that everyone seems to be saying the same thing. I attempt to avoid processed foods and anything that may have been given hormones/antibiotics or been genetically modified. Also I think avoiding things that can increase inflammation helps. I use Pink Himalayan salt instead of processed table salt for example.
I consume many ketogenic foods. I think it's a fancy term for just eating healthy foods. Raw Dark greens, fresh fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds, whole grains (barring intolerances), low sugar, healthy fats, etc.
Hi Steve,
I have been on the South Beach diet for about 3 months now. I don't purchase the foods, but follow the guidance in the books. I cannot tell you how much better I feel being 54lbs lighter. I feel better now than I have in the last 15 years. Walking more, eating less, drinking more water, lifting weights.
@A MyMSTeam Member, I would suggest a balance between Keto and Paleo. Paleo is dairy free and allows fruits. Keto is sugar free/low carb/high fat. Both are grain gluten free.
A perfect example of balance would be to follow an Anti-Inflammatory Diet or Healing Food Diet. You can Google to get a food list. It’s basically- gluten free, non processed, chemical preservative free, low sugar, low carb list of foods considered clean and whole food eating.
I’d eat smaller meals to avoid insulin spikes and have a carb and protein at each meal for balance. Hope this helps 🙂
