I was diagnosed with MS (by a MS specialist and local neurologist) in July due to lesions on my brain and one on my spinal cord. I started Tecfidera a few weeks after.

Yesterday, I went in for repeat MRIs and check-up with the MS specialist, and now she's not confident about MS. Apparently the spinal cord lesion is super subtle, as are my brain lesions. Spinal tap came back normal, but evoked potential (SSEP) was abnormal, as was NeuroTrax. It was noted I have spinal stenosis in lumbar spine… read more

@A MyMSTeam Member Ditto to what Hilhutch says. I am curious why neurologist wasn’t starting you on a lower strength MS treatment than Tecfidera. That’s one my neurologist doesn’t even think about trying until I’ve gone through a couple others first and then it’s NOT one she recommends because of all the potential side effects. Stop Tecfidera now, find new neurologist to get 2nd opinion, someone you could possibly start seeing.

My diagnosis was a blessing. I knew what was wrong with me. The uncertainty woyld have been problematic . How could there be a misdiagnosis.? I pray all goes well.

Sorry for the delayed response, but thank you everyone for responding. It's been a little overwhelming for me lately. I did get a definitive diagnosis from another neurologist, but not as specialized in the field of MS. He did note that my case is mild and unconventional, but little else causes inflammation in both the brain and spinal cord. All doctors are now simply saying the choice to be on a DMT is completely up to me, given the pros and cons to both scenarios. Right now, I'm leaning towards holding off, trying to live healthier and see if this thing never progresses.

I was questionable at first too with transverse myelitis in 2015. They put me on copaxone to be "safe". When that failed, my MS was confirmed by a severe case of optical neuritis in 2016 - and that's when I was put on Tecfidera. My MRIs are like yours - fairly "clean" according to my neuro with 2 questionable spots (1 brain, 1 spine) - Only thing that showed definitively was when I had optic neuritis.

This disease! While I'm blessed to have such a great care team and I appreciate them very much, it's so clear that nobody really knows much. My integrative medicine DR (who has MS herself) has shared that doctors don't really learn much about auto-immune diseases - only to diagnose and prescribe. I'm so glad I hooked up with her early on to learn other ways to manage my symptoms besides traditional western medicine pills. She's devoted her life to MS research since her diagnosis and is the only real knowledgeable doctor I have. I agree with others that getting another opinion is a good idea. After copaxone I wasn't sure what to do - my neuro wanted Tecfidera, but I had just started seeing a second neuro who wanted me on Gilenya. Feeling very uncomfortable "choosing" one's opinion over the other, I asked them to call each other and come to a consensus on my care path. I have kept both neuros since then because I like that they have different perspectives and approaches. In my opinion, a second (or third!) opinion never hurts!

Good luck to you! Wishing you all the best!!!! XX
