If you have TN, how do you handle dental work, specifically extractions? I need to have several molars removed via surgery but I am absolutely terrified to do it. I've been just suffering with pain in my gums, and gum boils, waiting for the roots to die rather than have the extractions. I am a big chicken when it comes to oral surgery, probably because I had my wisdom teeth out when I was 19 by a dentist who lied about being licensed to perform the procedure. I had an extremely bad, dangerous… read more

Members responded with deep empathy to a question about managing dental work with Trigeminal Neuralgia, with many validating the very real fear of procedures that can trigger painful flares. Several members with TN shared their own experiences, with one noting that extractions are possible even during remission, and recommending open communication with oral surgeons about TN, MS, and anxiety so that relaxation medication can be given beforehand. A recurring theme was the importance of not delaying dental care due to infection risks, while also acknowledging financial and medical barriers, with one member even sharing a specific gentle dentist in Greensboro, NC.

@A MyMSTeam Member used the words bite and root. Clever and he doesnt know it. Or does he?? 🧐

I agree, if you can do it just do it. Im finding less and less things just go away on their own. Of course if you cant, then just make sure you have meds to avoid infection. Best of luck!

I feel for you Jennifer! totally! I am afraid of pain, needles . . . and more. It's all our choice and I know I would have to say no to plenty of things. My Mom gets everything done they ever suggest! She is tough and brave. (and maybe crazy, lol)
For me, it would be Hell to the NO!!!
I am with you darlling!!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm in a bad TN flare right now but it happens every fall when the weather gets cold.
I don't have the money right now for any dental work, and I'm in NC so I can't get to the dentist you guys suggested.
I asked my dentist if he had experience with TN and he said yes. I wanted him to elaborate but he seemed to be avoiding the discussion so I don't believe he is being completely honest.

The good thing that has "come out" of losing all these molars is I don't have to have the mercury fillings removed since they fell out. If .I don't get an abscess I can wait for the roots to die. My Dad had his fillings removed and porcelain veneers put on and it cost him about $25,000.00. He has Parkinson's so he thought that might help.
I won't be doing that /:

I'm on 3600mg olf Gabapentin, Trileptal, Oxycarbazepine
and Indomethicin for the TN. The Gabapentin really makes me so dumb. I can't recall, I forget what I'm talking about mid sentence, can't recall words. If I reduce it my brain works right. I have to wait until the flare is completely over.
