Alright guys I know you are probably tired of hearing me talk about disability. I had my hearing Sept 18th and the judge said that he would be returning a favorable decision in my hearing. My lawyer told me that means we won my disability effective April 01 2016. I have not heard anything as of yet but my lawyer told me a few days ago that it could take 60 to 90 day to get everything processed and my backpay would go all the way back to April 2016
I am still nervous though. I just do not want… read more

@Slyvia73 I already weighed in but some of us here will never get "sick" of your questions about disability or what ever

@A MyMSTeam Member I am so happy for you. To see when Social Security gets everything taken care of and posts the information online including dates for when direct deposits will happen, you need to keep checking your online Social Security account to see when the information switches from pending or whatever it says right now to actual $ numbers. It will give you what your monthly payment will be, which day of month it will be deposited on, but more importantly it will tell you what your backpay $ amount will be, at least that’s what happened with mine.

I now realize I was very fortunate and I guess it was past time to quit working and go on Social Security disability because I did get approved first time applying. I just wanted to keep working for many more years because right after my Dad retired was when his health went to hell with Parkinson’s coming to the forefront for him, his doctor said it was caused from all the ammonia being around chicken manure for such a long time, his full-time job was hauling the stuff plus we raised baby chickens until they were 8 weeks old for fryers and he cleaned the manure out of the buildings; never wore a respirator at all. Retirement was a downhill slide from that point for him ending in his death when he was 76 years old. He broke both of hips and refused to use any assistance devices when it was obvious he needed them. That’s the reason it’s so easy for me to be willing to use them, I didn’t care what I looked like.

That’s also why I thought if I kept working as long as possible into my 60’s then I wouldn’t have bad stuff happen to me, wrong; I thought this all the way up to applying for SS Disability, even though yes, I already had MS and other non-MS related things going on. It was just the way my brain had been thinking for years, so it was hard to accept the fact I wasn’t going to be able to succeed in achieving that goal.

Yes, it was about 60-90 days. The whole process took about 2 years -from Nov. 2004 - Dec. 2006.. Plus the first 3 or 6 months (I've forgotten which) of being disabled didn't count.

@A MyMSTeam Member Please be assured that all you are waiting for now is the statement to change on your online Social Security account informing you of what $ amounts you will be receiving for monthly disability payments and your backpay $ amount. I know how you’re feeling right now because I was in your shoes, just hadn’t yet received confirmation of my approval for Social Security Disability let alone what $ amounts I would receive. You need to be patient which is hard to do, that and a daily check of your SS account to see when information changes on it.

I was happily surprised when one day I checked my account and instead of the “Decision has been made ...” message being there financial details about my approved SS Disability were. I could barely contain myself when I saw how much backpay $ I would be getting and it said had already been deposited into my checking account. It was perfect timing because my unemployment had just run out two months before and I was using savings to pay for things. Next I looked at my checking account to see if the $ were there, and sure enough, they were.

Something important to remember about the first deposit into your checking/savings account is included in your backpay $ amount is your first monthly disability $ payment too. So make sure to take that into account when deciding what to do with all that money. I got a little confused at first whether my first monthly disability $ payment was included or not. Had to go back and reread the information several times before I finally understood what it was saying, not sure why but just did.
