I disability retired through CalStrs in 2017 and at the time was told that was all the funds I could have access to. Fast forward two years later I talk with someone else who says since I have the "40 qualifying quarters" for SDI through non-teaching jobs that I qualify for that too - so I went to their office today to apply. I read some of the answers that you do not want to bug your doctors. You have to bother your doctors you need to have to supporting physicians see that you are unable to work. The paperwork isn't that complicated and they're used to it. Making appointment let them know what you expect them to write And get their opinion. They have to agree that you are disabled and unable to do the job you were doing. Teaching became way too much for me ... and I have a lot of energy! By the end of the school day take felt like I had an elephant sitting on me . Let's keep talking I would like to know what's going on in other states. I am from Minnesota .
Yes I did calstrs disability rerirement 2 yrs ago. I dont think you can get SDI unless you were working and currently paying into it at time you were disabled.
Just thought I'd update folks: I found a great lawyer who is familiar with both programs, and I qualify for both given that I've paid into both for the required period of time within the past 10 qualification years. If anyone else is an educator and needs assistance with this sort of thing, let me know and I'll share his name with you. He's truly fantastic and has relieved a TON of stress now that he's at the helm!
Every state is different.. state teacher board and unions . It's basic you can no longer do your job... you are disabled. Did your district have long and short term disability insurance... for sure you should have that. It sounds like your are getting retirement disability...? Making ends meet is difficult especially if you are single.. (me). You can go on SSDI for a time and find work and the amount may change. Sounds like you are trying to find places you can use your skill set🌞👍😎... It's what you're great at and it's your passion.
I've been doing some private tutoring for all grade level and college age kids. That has been wonderful and the money excellent!
