Both institutions you mention will not be charging money for a pay and treat service, they do it for research and your friend in Sheffield would have had to be accepted under their research criteria. At this point in time there's nowhere in the US or UK where you can go and "buy" HSCT.
As for the statistics, up until 3 years ago when i researched extensively, there had been under 5000 HSCT procedures done since the 1st in 1999, it's nowhere near large enough a sample to difinitively argue statistics, someone making $65000 out of treating you is gonna make everything sound better than it is though, you can count on that.
I do think stem cell transplant holds great promise for MS. But that's it - promise. I don't believe the science is "there" yet. That's precisely the reason no insurance will touch it and most is done overseas. So much risk of death, no guarantee whatsoever that it will make a darn lick of difference, so many legalities and risk to medical professionals to it in the US, etc. etc.
Just consider a couple of new things - what about any of us who have concomitant diseases? They have to totally wipe out the immune system so anything we're already battling can run rampant. What if that concomitant disease has been subclinical up to now? We could walk into stem cell transplant only to allow some tiny cluster of cancer cells to suddenly take over.
Hi Yoda147, if you do some research you can see that they also do it for spms and ppms. The success rate of halting the progression is lower though. I believe its around 70% versus 90% for rrms. Also note that they do perform HSCT in the states at Northwestern University in Chicago...Also UK is doing it alot, they are now doing it in 4 hospitals in the UK...my friend just completed it in Sheffield
HSCT stops MS in its tracks and there is no need for taking drugs after...there is a dozen or so facilities around the world doing it...it is more successful for RRMS..Protocols have become better and mortality rates are under 1% now..I did HSCT Moscow in October 2015 and my edss is now a 3 from 4..strongly recommend this therapy if you can afford it
Going in for stem cell treatments on Wednesday. Phoenix AZ. Stem Cell Centers. Wish me luck. They don't use harvested stem cells from your fat. They explained how that was a waste of money. They use stem cells from C-section placentas that have been donated. Expensive :-( six sessions for $15K they will reimburse 1/2 if it doesn't help. They said so far they haven't had to give any money back.
