When I try to spend any time outside, just walking around, or washing my car, within twenty minutes or so I feel like I am going to go down. It's a very helpless feeling, and I have to get into the air-conditioning and allow my body to regenerate. I miss enjoying the summer. How dangerous is this and what are the consequences, I worry that it could cause my ms to get worse, faster than normal, if there is a normal.

Members responded to concerns about overheating with MS, reassuring that heat worsens symptoms temporarily but does not cause permanent damage or speed up MS progression. Several members shared practical tools that have helped them stay active outdoors, including cooling vests (available free through MSAA), cooling neck wraps from Shared Solutions, frogg togg towels, misting fans, and mini fans that plug into phones. A recurring theme was the importance of planning ahead by going outside in the morning, setting timers for symptom checks, staying hydrated, and getting into air conditioning quickly when symptoms appear.

I use froggtog cooling towels. They work well except in super high humidity, which we only get here for about a month in summer (now). I likewise LOVE to be outside. BUT it can get bad for me quickly - my hands will lose dexterity and my vision goes. This can be super dangerous if I've driven somewhere and have to get back home so I'm extra careful away from home. I set a timer on my phone when I work in the garden so I can do a quick symptoms check every 15-20 min or so and stop to drink water. And during the summer I'm only outdoors in the morning. I have heard that overdoing it typically will result in temporary flares of previously active symptoms but that occasionally it can result in something more serious, so I try to be very careful as I don't want MS to take more from me than it already has! Oh! There are mini fans you can plug into your phone that are pretty cool! I also keep mister fans out in the covered patio so I can stay outside comfortably for longer. XX

Heat is a real problem for me and most MS people. Shared Solutions is a support system the MS community. They can provide cooling neck wraps filled with beads. You can dampen them and tie it around your neck. There are also cooling vests you can purchase. Many of my worst days have been from allowing myself to get too overheated. This is one area we can have some control over!
