Anyone try to get life insurance after being diagnosed?
Yep. I got a $50,000 Universal Life policy after 10 years and a 100,000 Whole Life policy a few years after that. It helped that my Neurologist wrote that I had “a mild case of MS” and something to the effect that I was not likely to have severe symptoms in the future.
ChaCha, I didn't try to get it but still have it. If someone is recently diagnosed and wants to get a nominal amount for $50K or more, One can expect difficulty.
Insurance companies seem to not want to touch diagnosed people. I found a company which offered a 10-15 thousand dollar policy and I began the process of monthly payments to them.
When I signed all the paperwork; It looked something like this:
I pay xxx$$$ monthly.
After 24 months it becomes official. If I had a $15K plan and passed away *before that time then the numerics differ.
Whatever was paid into it + 10% (or so) would be sent to beneficiary via check. However, If one is making payments and passed the 2 year/24 month timeframe; The 15K amount is guaranteed.
Since there are so many variables, I would contact a qualified insurance agent.
If someone presently "has" life insurance that was before the diagnosis, I believe they can maintain & keep it. I don't believe it is legal for a insurance company to just drop them, etc. Again, Contact a qualified insurance agent with any questions in proportion to that kind of scenario.
Some may be able to get some through the spouse's work as LindaFrazee61 stated above in another post.
I would love to provide who I went with but cannot due to the guidelines on this platform of mymsteam.com. The risk there is that would be considered free advertising and if other insurance companies caught wind of referral for free, They would knock down the door of mymsteam.com.
If that ever happened, This website would not look the same.
Sorry so long. ChaCha, The answer to your question (I feel) is answered in the beginning of this post IN GENER AL.
ALL SPECIFICS should be (again) initiated between any interested parties and a qualified insurance agent/broker.
Best,
Danny
Me too. Been turned two times, but was ok to get it through my husband’s work.
Yes, not so much luck with that!
Most often I heard about getting group life insurance, and I have been able to get that, and I still have an accidental death and disability policy through a professional organization I still belong to. The life policy I had as a member of my last employer got too expensive after I stopped working, so I dropped it. The $50,000 universal policy I had, I cashed it out a few years ago because its value started going down after I was 65. But my $100,000 whole life policy was not solicited by me, and is with a major well-known insurance company. The company rep came to my office after I made partner at my law firm, and had had MS diagnosed 20 years earlier! I still pay for it, so maybe that’s what’s different...the cash value goes up every year more than the amount I pay for it, and I bought it originally for the sake of my daughter, who is the sole beneficiary of the $100,000 face value she would receive. It accomplished my concern when she was 5 (when I bought it) about providing for her and it’s a money maker for the insurance company, unless I decide to cash it in some day. In the meantime, it’s a safer investment than the stock market!
