Diagnosed with MS March 2020. Began suffering debilitating nausea/vomiting in June. Recently noticed that my blood sugar was spiking so put 2&2 together. It’s occurring @A MyMSTeam Member hours after taking my Tecfidera. Once blood sugar back in range I’m good to go. In August, I saw an integrated medicine doctor to help with diet so I am not eating sugar/carbs. All food sensitivities currently eliminated. A1C @6 and all functions otherwise in range. Therefore, I don’t think it’s my… read more
My issue is that it is causing a spike in blood glucose levels so I am trying to find anyone else who has had this issue when taking Tecfidera. Met with Neurologist today and she suggested changing meds. The Tecfidera is working though. My MRI indicated not changes so that’s good. I just need to find a solution for the blood sugar spikes.
Tecfidera does cause numerous issues in the stomach/gut. I was on it for a year and quit because of the severe abdominal side effects that it caused. Tecfidera also leads to an increase in GI cancers. MS is a complicated disease with many different issues to consider. Your body and what you notice about how your body handles any medicine tells you a lot. The fact that you are having issues like clockwork 8 hours after taking Tecfidera is very significant. And I do not believe that meds are the only way to stop the disease progression. There is NO medicine with an efficacy rate of %100. Listen to your body, and do what you feel is best for you.
I've been on Tec for 4+ years and it's working for me. Some side effects, but fairly minor. I use DigestZen at the first sign of any GI issues - goes away in 10 minutes. I thought my acupuncturist was crazy when she suggested it, but it really does work - for acid reflux, or any other GI issue (either over or under active). Glad you're seeing an integrated med DR. That was a major turning point for me. Elimination diet is gold standard and helped me so much! Sounds like you're in good hands - if you want to learn more of my DRs strategies, she has MS too, so she really knows her stuff and has been highly effective treating herself and others with her strategies. She's a regular guest on my MS.UNDERSTOOD podcast. Hope all your other symptoms dissipate soon! XX
I hear you. I recently had an MRI and will be going over my results with my doctor this week. I feel worse now that I’m taking this medication, not the same or better.
The other thing that comes to mind is tight muscles/spasticity and an increase in lactic acid.
I'll try and stop playing doctor now lol 👍
