I enjoy a glass of wine with dinner. But like a lot of MS-ers, frequent nightly bathroom trips are part of the equation. My PCP, my urologist, my neuro, all of them, say that alcohol is like coffee--it makes you go. OK, fine. I stopped the wine, completely, two weeks ago. Now my nightly trips have diminished, a definite cause-and-effect. From 2, 3, sometimes 5 per night to a consistent 1-2 per night. What are others' experiences and impressions with alcohol, especially at dinner?

Members shared rich personal experiences around alcohol, MS, and nighttime bathroom trips, with many confirming that cutting back or eliminating alcohol noticeably reduced how often they got up at night. Several members also found that stopping all liquids by 6 or 7 pm made a big difference, while others noted that even without alcohol, MS-related bladder issues still caused frequent trips. A recurring theme was that everyone's body reacts differently, and finding what works through personal trial and observation is key to managing sleep and bladder health with MS.

I have never associated the alcohol with the number of times I get up. Now I have a new study to conduct.

You know I started experimenting with my body to see what worked or made it worse...
Water...I know you all heard it before but I have found I can pretty much drink anything throughout the day...but come about 6pm I drink a large 18 plus ounces of water and about an hour before bed I drink another 16oz of water and I'm getting up but maybe once a night if that. Before this I was getting up as much as 5 to 6 times which made for a rotten night sleep as you know...lol. Just what has worked very well for me. Hope it might help someone else.

Since i cut my alcohol intake to no more than two nites a week, ive seen an improvement on nightly trips, just one or two now. Also have stopped drinking tea at nite and that has helped. Perhaps the best for me is to avoid any and all liquids past 7 pm, alcohol or not.

I'm curious I haven't had any issues like that. But I do not drink alcohol at all. It's not because of my M.S it's because of the family history of alcoholism. Better to be safe then sorry. BUT I do drink a lot of coffee. I usually have a large travel mug going when I go to sleep and yet I don't usually have to get up and pee in middle of the night. This is making me curious about the amount of my fellow M.Sers that have that issue.
