San Francisco Bay Area, CA

I had RRMS 1970-2001 and now have SPMS without any flairs for 10 years now. I can walk, but only hanging on to metal grab bars on both sides of me. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I get my ms care from UCSF MS Center. I have become anxiety-ridden with fears of falling and breaking a bone. It is very hard to get into and out of my bathroom. Other than physical therapy, I’d like to know what equipment and what treatments have others received who are in the same boat as I am! I have the… read more

Liz,
Use a Rollator or wheelchair as often as you can so you don’t risk falling.

When I could still stand and pivot I bought a really heavy duty walker to get off my wheelchair and pivot on to the toilet.

I also took the door off one of the bathrooms.

As I have a tub in that bathroom I mounted a seat pivoted and slid to get in and out of the tub.

I also bought a commode for over the toilet as it was easier for me to stand from higher heights. And it had one arm that move down to help me get onto it.

Before that I purchased seeds that raise the toilet seat even higher

I changing what I can do and how I can do it. My walking is slow and limited. Somethings I can’t do. We took out the bathtub/shower and put in a corner shower with hand grab bar, so far I’m good with it. Maybe later more grab bars and a shower stool. I use my foldable walker more. There is probably funding for MS people to get stuff, but so far we have been making do. Maybe get I touch with the MS Society in your state and see if they have anything to apply for.

@A MyMSTeam Member I had to have my bathroom door removed as to be able to wheel in and out. I also live in San Francisco. There is an organization called ReCares (63 Dorland Street, btwn. 17th &18th), open only on Thursdays, where you can go to get and/or donate items for improving your challenges in and out of your house. I got a tub transfer bench there, a manual wheelchair, etc. If u own a house, there is a program called Rebuilding Together that will retrofit your home to suite your needs. Also you would be able to contact the Walk-in-tub company for your bathroom. I hope this helps. Keep me posted or if you need more help.

Our province provides Aids to Daily living. You still have to pay 80 bucks a bar but the bars for my walk in shower are God send. So is my Indonesion teak shower seat! Thank you Wayfair!

I go to Kaiser but I've noticed that none of the 'Social Worker's' know any useful information to help MSers with much needed resources. I was assigned a Social Worker as well who was absolutely useless. I knew more than she did😂. Unfortunately, I learned everything , pretty much on my own. I'm more than happy to share what I've learned. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
